I found this account from; “Lincoln’s Lieutenants” in regards to discussions between Governor Pickens and Robert Toombs in relation to Fort Sumter very interesting:
“As avid as he was for the South’s independence, Toombs warned his colleagues that initiating an attack on Fort Sumter now would set off a civil war beyond imagining. ‘You will wantonly strike a hornet’s nest which extends from mountains to ocean,’ he declared, ‘and legions, now quiet, will swarm out and sting us to death. It is unnecessary; it puts us in the wrong; it is fatal’.”
How correct was he!
